Earlier this year an article titled “Dear Manufacturers: Sustainability Counts”appeared on the Interiors + Sources website. The article highlighted the importance of sustainable manufacturing practices, and how these stories often get lost among the excitement of new product developments. In response to that article, I thought it would be of interest to share Stance Healthcare’s commitment to environmental, social and economically sustainable business practices.
As a family founded business, Stance Healthcare sees sustainability as an opportunity to evolve and adapt; to continuously look for ways that will keep the business thriving and minimize negative environmental impacts. Nowadays sustainability isn’t only about being a good corporate citizen and the ‘feel good’ factor – it’s an industry standard.
The sustainability measures of institutional furniture manufacturers are recognized through level® certifications, which conform to the BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard. BIFMA International is the recognized leader in developing standards for the North American office and institutional furniture industry. It was created to deliver the most open and transparent means of evaluating and communicating the environmental and social impacts of furniture products in the built environment.
Working towards product level® certifications, Stance Healthcare’s sustainability efforts began with a Sustainability Management Systems Team, which is part of the company’s overall management system. Among other activities, the team is responsible for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing, and maintaining the Corporate Sustainability Policy. In addition, as part of our Sustainability Management System, Stance Healthcare has implemented a zero waste-to-landfill initiative. We are continuously working to meet this goal through objectives and targets that employ strategies that will, over time, divert all waste from our manufacturing operations from being sent to the landfill.
Throughout the past few years we have implemented many new recycling programs that have significantly aided in our endeavor to reduce our waste-to-landfill by 2020. Included in our efforts are programs for the recycling of shrink wrap, wooden pallets, scrap metal, toner cartridges, plastic components, coffee pods, and organic waste. By far, our most obvious success has come from the implementation of a single stream recycling program throughout our facility. We’ve also purchased reusable coffee mugs and water bottles, prior to discontinuing the purchase of disposable coffee cups and water bottles.
As sustainability relates to energy usage, we are very proud to have reduced our energy usage by 26%* during the first year of obtaining our level® certification. This was mainly accomplished through the installation of an energy efficient HVAC system and replacing the lighting across the entire organization to LED. At Stance Healthcare, we recognize that our sustainability efforts are ongoing and must continue to evolve. We welcome the challenge of discovering innovative solutions that will help us achieve our ongoing sustainability objectives and better the environment for future generations.
