Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Furniture Compliance

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects people with disabilities from discrimination in many areas of public life. Although there are no certifications to identify a product as ADA-compliant, a manufacturer may determine if a product meets guideline requirements that contribute to the overall universal usability. These guidelines are typically applied to fixed furnishings, not freestanding furniture as there are other factors that contribute to the overall accessibility.

ADA RECOMMENDED CLEARANCES -

There are many factors that contribute to product accessibility and wheelchair access including approachability and maneuverability. The following ADA guidelines regarding table clearances should also be considered:

  • Maximum table height of 34”
  • Minimum table height of 28”
  • Minimum barrier free width of 30”
  • Minimum depth clearance of 19” under the worksurface
