Project Profile: Butler HospitalProvidence, RI, USA
In the United States, an estimated 1 in 8 emergency department patients are admitted for mental health, Behavioral Health, or substance abuse-related issues. At Stance, we are encouraged by the steadily growing number of mental health facilities opening across the country. Supporting these facilities with our thoughtfully-designed furniture is one way we live out our brand mission of Improving Lives by Design – and the new short-term facility at Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, is a prime example of the personalized care we envision our products for.
Built for patients experiencing mental health challenges, Butler Hospital’s 25-bed facility provides a flexible, comforting alternative to crowded emergency rooms, which can be triggering with high-stimulation lights and sounds. Rather than a typical triaged patient care zone, the unit features a flexible pod system, which can accommodate beds for patients of various ages, and provide isolation rooms when needed.
In addition to the calmer, more private environment, Butler’s short-term facility features subtle yet substantial safety elements that better anticipate the needs of mental health patients.
Emergency room furniture can potentially pose a risk for patients experiencing mental health and Behavioral Health crises; even common signs of wear-and-tear such as laminate chipping or wobbly chair legs can be dangerous. Stance’s Behavioral Health furniture, specified throughout the entire unit, goes far to support both the calm and safe experience Butler Hospital aims to provide its patients and care providers. From seating to storage to beds, multiple Stance lines complement each other with soothing colorways and textures, while all being over-engineered to perform and endure high-use environments like this.
The design team selected the full suite of products from our award-winning Flo series for Behavioral Health. It’s a natural fit for a highly personalized environment where every detail matters. Flo’s storage bed, guest seating, and dining collection are roto-molded, with seamless, rounded edges that invite end-users to relax comfortably and safely. Care providers appreciate Flo’s easy-clean, stain-resistant design, which is ligature-resistant, keeping both parties safe.
Our Frontier desk, with its rounded edges bolt-to-wall options for added safety, offers multifunction for patients in these supervised areas, while the popular Verity lounge seating offers a sleek, comfortable sit for therapy or quiet time.
Butler also appointed our easy-to-clean Caliber armless chair, which is built for intensive use environments, and is stackable for movement throughout the facility. In Behavioral Health settings, even furniture like drum tables should minimize risk for patients and providers. Our heavy-duty Bali drum tables, offering a weighted steel plinth base for added protection against damage, are also featured in the space.
Through our thoughtfully designed and appointed furniture, Stance is honored to play a supporting role in providing an improved, highly personalized healthcare experience to Butler Hospital patients. Follow along with Stance as we continue partnering to bring unexpected comfort and safety to mental health and Behavioral Health facilities.
